Bloomberg Businessweek Podcast – Apple Outlook Mixed Post Earnings on China Concerns

(11/2/2023) Lance Cannon joined the Bloomberg Businessweek Podcast in the Drive to the Close segment and discussed the Hood River International Opportunity Fund.

In a recent Bloomberg Businessweek interview, Hood River portfolio manager, Lance Cannon provided insightful perspectives on international market trends and Hood River’s investment approach. Hood River’s bottom-up strategy – consistent in both our US and International equity funds – maintains perspective and a focus on quality management teams, and constantly seeks sustainable earnings growth. Lance highlighted On Holdings, the maker of On cloud shoes, pointing to the positive impact of international expansion on EBITDA margin increases and overall earnings growth. The discussion also touched on Baltic Classified’s social media platform, thriving in regions where major players like Facebook have less influence, emphasizing growth potential through both regional expansion and enhanced margins on a per customer basis.

The interview seamlessly transitioned to the small-cap market, which is currently trading at a discount to their large cap counterparts, where Lance recommended a focus on small-cap names displaying positive earnings revisions for potential alpha generation. Internationally, Lance and the team see opportunities across a diverse group of regions, anticipating growth in many countries including India. Lastly, Basic Fit was spotlighted, a Netherlands-based fitness company Lance dubbed the Planet Fitness of Europe. He pointed out its low-cost model, expansion plans, and limited competition, offering a condensed yet comprehensive snapshot of Hood River’s strategic insights and market observations.

To wrap things up, it’s worth noting that the Hood River International Opportunity strategy is making waves, currently ranking in the top fourth percentile out of 135 foreign small/mid-cap funds for the 1-year period ending October 31, 2023, based on total returns by Morningstar. If our outcomes and the allure of small-cap opportunities beyond the US have piqued your interest, we’re always ready to initiate a conversation.

Investment Considerations
The Fund invests in small-cap securities which present a greater risk of loss than large-cap securities, and in growth companies which can be more sensitive to the company’s earnings and more volatile than the stock market in general. The Fund also invests in foreign securities which are subject to risks including currency fluctuations, economic and political change and differing accounting standards. The Fund may invest in derivatives and initial public offerings (IPOs), which are highly volatile. Additional risk information may be found in the prospectus.
